What are Vector Graphics?

A vector graphic is an image drawn using shapes, lines, and coordinates in 2D space - or in other words, they work using a list of vectors tied together with some math. This is in contrast to the much more common method of storing an image by writing down the color of each pixel, known as a raster graphic.

That's not to say that vector images are better than raster images - each method has its strengths and ideal uses. For example, raster formats are much more suited to storing photographs, while vector graphics are ideal for web design. In fact, the late Adobe Flash's ability to dominate the web was partly due to its nature as a vector graphic format.

Even though Flash has been retired, vector graphics are here to stay and are a vital part of the modern web.
